Google Started Removing Websites Banned in Russia From Search Results - Reports

Google has started removing links to websites containing information banned in Russia from its search engine, Russian Vedomosti newspaper reported citing sources

MOSCOW (UrduPoint News / Sputnik – 07th February, 2019) Google has started removing links to websites containing information banned in Russia from its search engine, Russian Vedomosti newspaper reported citing sources.

In October, Russia passed a law that requires all search engines to filter and block content from websites flagged as illegal in a special registry. Google ignored the Federal blacklist, leading to administrative charges against it in November. A week ago, Google paid 500,000 rubles ($7,592) fine for failing to comply with the law.

A source in Russia‘s telecommunications regulator Roskomnadzor told Vedomosti on Wednesday that over the past few weeks Google had been removing banned content from search results. A source close to Google confirmed that the company had has been deleting some links included in the registry.

According to the report, Google has reached an agreement with Roskomnadzor under which the communication watchdog would send it updates on the list of banned sources on a daily basis.
